...unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,
it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears fruit. ~John 12:24 (NRSV)
I do a lot of hiking and often collect pinecones in the forest. I marvel at the potential for growth and forest renewal in one pinecone. The average pinecone has 150 seeds. Some varieties of pinecones only open up during a wildfire.
The heat from the fire melts the resin that holds the cone together allowing the cone to open and release the seed. Without fire, the seeds remain enclosed in the cone and will not germinate. They could lay dormant for many years waiting for a fire. The forest is renewed because of the fire. It is a reminder to trust the fire. We often see only the damage of the fire and try to suppress wildfires; however, fire can also prove beneficial to the natural ecosystems. Fire is sometimes important in maintaining the health of the forest, even when it seems harmful. Just as fires are useful for new forest growth and renewal, storms of life are also agents of transformation and new growth in us.
Jesus told his friends that he will have to die to bring about new life. He explained the importance of the sacrifice he would make but his friends didn't understand. He asked his disciples to trust and follow him, and to practice their faith by imitating his example. Marsh states of the Jesus followers, "The movement was subversive, dangerous, and free. And still it burns with that alchemical fire. If you follow, and surrender your life, you will open up, spilling your seeds of new growth into a world so hungry for it".
